The right of a woman to propose on February 29 originated centuries ago, when the leap year day had no recognition in English law. Since the day was considered to bear no legal status, it was assumed that traditions also bore no legal status. Consequently, women who were concerned that they might be doomed to spinsterhood would take advantage of this anomaly & propose to the man they wished to marry. It was also thought since the leap year day corrected the discrepancy between the calendar year of 365 days & the time taken for the Earth to complete one orbit of the Sun, it was the perfect opportunity for women to correct a tradition which was one-sided & unjust.
