In Medieval times, the processional was particularly colorful. Gaily dressed minstrels would sing & play pipes as they headed the parade. Next, came a young man bearing the bride-cup, which was a chalice or vase of silver or silver-gilt decorated with gilt, rosemary & ribbons. The bride then followed, attended by two bachelors & approximately twelve knights & pages. Next, came maidens bearing the bride cake, followed by girls with garlands of wheat. The groom then appeared, led by two maidens. He walked in the midst of his closest friends, including the best man. Relatives of the couple followed with less intimate friends bringing up the rear.
