Originating as a fertility symbol in Ancient Rome, cakes made from wheat or barley were broken over the bride's head for good luck. The origin of tiered wedding cake is found in Anglo-Saxon times when guests would bring small cakes to the ceremony & stack them on top of each other. Newly-married couples traditionally kiss over the tiered cake being careful not to knock it over. If successful, it is believed a lifetime of good fortune is assured. Couples also make the first cut in the cake to signify sharing their lives. Guests eat a crumb to ensure good luck. It is unlucky for a bride to bake her own cake. Sleeping with cake under her pillow is said to make a single woman dream of her future husband.
